Residents and Business Voluntary Camera Registration

The Scotch Plains Police Department wants your help in reducing crime by voluntary taking part in our camera registry program. The program allows residents and business owners to register their video surveillance systems and other video devices with the Scotch Plains Police Department. When a crime occurs, police will have the ability to identify locations of nearby video cameras and seek the assistance of the community to help our officers collect video evidence and follow up on investigations of criminal activity.

Through the program, the Scotch Plains Police Department will be able to contact residents or business who are using a video device in an area where a crime occurred. Police would ask residents to check their video surveillance system for a specific date and time for any video that may show the activity involved with a crime, such as a getaway car or the direction that a person of interest was headed. If any video evidence is found, the resident or business owner can contact the Scotch Plains Police Department at (908) 322-7100 to make arrangements to retrieve the video.

Registration is completely voluntary and there is no cost involved with the registration. Registering your information does not provide the Scotch Plains Police Department with direct access to your camera. You may also delete your registration at any time by notifying the Scotch Plains Police Department. An individual’s personal information will be kept confidential by the police department unless directed to disclose by a court order. Your information is only accessed by law enforcement personnel who are investigating a crime in the vicinity of where the camera is located.

The Scotch Plains Police Department is the only agency that will contact you in the future if there is a criminal incident in the vicinity of your video camera. Scotch Plains Police personnel, if necessary, would request a copy of the video captured by your camera device to provide information of a criminal incident. Please drop off the completed registration forms to the Scotch Plains Police Department.
